in Syria near Homs. It was crusaders’ largest stronghold in the Holy Land. Back in the 11th century it was a Kurdish fortress that was seized by Europeans on crusade. It was actually captured by them several times and finally handed over to the Knights Hospitaller who totally rebuilt it and made it a mighty base. The castle was protected by thick walls with watch towers. Since it was a spur castle it had a lot of rooms hidden inside the rock. The fortress was damaged during the Syrian civil war.
